The College of Engineering, Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Michigan invites applicants for a part-time LEO Intermittent Lecturer position for the Fall 2024 term.

Responsibilities*

The Center for Entrepreneurship's courses are the epitome of experiential learning, demonstrative of entrepreneurial mindset, and open to all U-M students across all 19 schools/colleges.

The person in this position will be responsible for teaching ENTR 390.012: Digital Product Design during the Fall 2024 term.

This 3-credit course aims to provide students with a foundational understanding of digital product design, emphasizing its relationship with problem-solving, graphic design, business, technology, and data. Digital Product Designers are responsible for transforming ideas into interactions and interfaces while considering business, financial, and other contextual constraints.

As an introductory, hands-on course, Digital Product Design is open to students from all disciplines across the campus. It is a key component of the College of Engineering's CFE, promoting entrepreneurial design and interdisciplinary learning.

Students In This Course Will Be Prepared To

  • Design Products: Create wireframes, interactions, and visual designs.
  • Validate Solutions: Develop prototypes and conduct usability testing.
  • Utilize Design Tools: Apply typography, color, shape, space, and industry-standard tools (such as Balsamiq, Sketch, Figma, InVision, and Pivotal Tracker) to create functional, usable, and aesthetically pleasing designs.
  • Critique and Feedback: Solicit and provide constructive feedback, critique design work, and justify design decisions.
  • Understand the Product Life Cycle: Learn the digital product life cycle and agile methodologies to transition digital products from idea to launch.
  • Explore Information and Product Architectures: Understand how these architectures impact design decisions.
  • Team Dynamics: Understand the roles of the entire product team and the designer's place within it.
  • Entrepreneurial Mindset: Develop an appreciation for and understanding of an entrepreneurial mindset.


The course will equip students with the practical skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the field of digital product design, fostering creativity and innovation in the design of digital products.

The course is scheduled for 15 weeks during the Fall 2024 term. Course faculty will be responsible for preparing course materials and leading a weekly 3-hour interactive in-person lecture, holding office hours weekly, honing assignments and guiding student project teams + individual projects, managing milestones for and grading student projects, and attending the CFE's monthly Faculty Community Meetings.

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduate degree in a relevant field or equal combination of education and experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in digital product design, including product launch and development in industry, and the entrepreneurial process - from idea conception, project and/or product development, customers, finances, and marketing
  • Demonstrated experience in prototyping and/or new venture creation both at small and large scale
  • Ability to learn conceptual frameworks quickly and apply them to practical student needs; designing and preparing active-learning lessons Demonstrated ability to teach and work effectively in a classroom environment in a classroom environment, including the ability to establish credibility and rapport with students
  • Collaborative team-building and strong communication skills (including oral and visual presentations)
  • Steadfast attention to detail and accuracy, in a timely and responsive manner


Desired Qualifications*

  • Advanced degree (Ph.D.) in a relevant field
  • Experience in makerspace education and/or endeavors
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems (e.g. Canvas)


Additional Information

This position is posted for the Fall 2024 term at 30% effort (12 hours per week).

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
